On Tuesday, we received wonderful news from Dr. McClellan (Lucas’ Endocrinologist). Based on the blood results from April and now in August, Lucas’ “rickets are completely gone!” Of course, I cried at the news.
To think, we discovered Lucas’ rickets issues in March 2014. At that time, no one could tell us if this would be a lifelong bone growth issue or something Lucas could grow out of. In March 2014, Lucas was in the 11% for height. Fast forward 18 months, to now, and Lucas is all the way back up to the 54% for height. Dr. McClellan is extremely pleased with Lucas progress. If Lucas stays flat at the 54% for height for the rest of his childhood, then Dr. McClellan predicts Lucas would be 5′ 10″ or 5’11”. However, Dr. McClellan feels Lucas is doing exceptionally well with his growth and that he could possibly meet his full genetic potential of being in the 95% for height which would place Lucas in the 6’2″ range. Thank you Jesus for taking this worry off of our hearts & minds!
Since Lucas is doing so well, Dr. McClellan recommended taking Lucas off of the vitamin D supplement. In 6 weeks, we will run another set of labs to ensure Lucas’ body is staying in the normal range without the extra vitamin D supplement. If all goes well, then we will run labs again at the end of November.
For now, Lucas is only taking calcium 2x per day to keep his rickets numbers stable. Eventually we should be able to stop taking the calcium supplements.
Feeling blessed and grateful Lucas’ body has beaten rickets. Lucas is our fearless warrior. With the Lord on our side, we can fight any battle and win!
